Chateau de Versailles, residence of the French monarchs and cultural heartbeat of Europe for about 100 years until the Revolution changed all that in 1789. Egotistical Louis XIV created Versailles from his father's hunting lodge about 20 miles outside Paris. The opulence is visible and palpable. It's no wonder, to this day, oppressed people sooner or later rebel against their oppressors.
