EUROPE SEPTEMBER 2015-PARIS

9/6/15 What would be more fitting after a sleepless transatlantic flight than spending the first afternoon in Paris' Pere-Lachaise Cemetery? The main reason for our visit was to witness the grave of one of our most favorite musicians/poets, Jim Morrison, but we found many other luminaries. Opened in 1804, the peaceful solace as we strolled through this place was just what we needed.

Gertrude Stein (1874-1946)
 The Columbarium/Crematorium
 Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
 Monuments depicting the atrocities at various Nazi concentration camps

 Edith Piaf (1915-1963)

 Jim Morrison's tomb had to be fenced off a few years ago because his admirers were getting carried away during their homages

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
            Shall be lifted—nevermore! Edgar Allan Poe
